The economic signs are pointing in the right direction — here’s why that matters if you’re buying or refinancing.
After a rocky year for interest rates, we’re finally seeing some good news. While nothing’s guaranteed in this market, several key signals are giving us reason to believe mortgage rates may continue to trend lower through the end of the year.
Here’s what we’re watching — and why it should give buyers (and even some homeowners thinking about refinancing) a reason to be optimistic:
The Fed Is Hinting at Easing Up
Translation: less pressure on rates.
Earlier this week, the Fed hinted that they may slow down something called Quantitative Tightening — their policy of pulling money out of the economy to control inflation.
Why it matters:
When the Fed starts to ease off the brakes (aka slowing down their tightening policies), it’s a sign they’re worried about the economy cooling off too much. To counter that, they may cut interest rates or ease financial conditions — both of which help mortgage rates go down.
The Job Market Is Softening
And that actually helps rates.
It sounds backward, but when job reports come in weak, it’s actually good for mortgage rates. Fewer jobs = slower economy = lower rates.
Before the government shutdown delayed new economic reports, we saw signs of:
- Weaker-than-expected hiring
- Revisions showing past job growth was overstated
- A general cooling in labor demand
This trend is likely still in play — and could accelerate if more soft job data comes out once the shutdown ends.
Inflation Isn’t Spiking
And that keeps things stable.
Even with rising oil prices, global conflict, and political drama in the headlines, inflation hasn’t made a surprise comeback — and that’s the key thing the Fed cares about.
As long as inflation stays tame, the Fed has no reason to keep tightening, and rates are more likely to drift lower or stay flat than rise.
Bottom Line:
It’s complicated, but the short version is this:
✅ The Fed is backing off the brakes
✅ The job market is cooling
✅ Inflation is behaving
Put all that together, and we don’t expect mortgage rates to go up again this year. In fact, we think we’ll see a bit of downward movement heading into the holidays.
